The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking a highly motivated Senior Researcher / Researcher - Social Science to join its office in Kathmandu, Nepal. This role is integral to advancing social science research on water, land, energy, and natural resources, focusing on the Himalayan region and South and Southeast Asia.

Senior Researcher / Researcher Job Description:

In this role, you will lead cutting-edge social science research on water, land, energy, natural resources, and agrarian livelihoods. Applying a gender equality and social inclusion lens, you will advance transformative research that addresses the climate crisis and supports food, land, and water systems innovation.

Responsibilities of Senior Researcher/ Researcher:

  • Leading innovative research and proposal development on climate-resilient water management, irrigation, and Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem nexus solutions.
  • Exploring policies and institutional solutions, equity and intersectional dynamics of decision-making in water, land, and food systems.
  • Contributing to research on gender and social dynamics of migration, climate change, water access, landscape management, and rural livelihoods.
  • Designing and evaluating contextually relevant R4D solutions for climate change resilience, water management, and food systems.
  • Collaborating with partners, governments, private sector, CSOs, and CGIAR centers to advance water-focused R4D in South and Southeast Asia.
  • Supporting fundraising efforts and managing project budgets while mentoring early career researchers.

Required Qualification & Experience for Senior Researcher/ Researcher:

  • Senior Researcher level: 
    • PhD in social science discipline (sociology, human geography, anthropology, gender studies, development studies) with at least 10 years of relevant post-doctoral experience in water and natural resources.
  • Researcher level:
    • PhD with at least 5 years of post-doctoral experience or Master's degree with at least 10 years of experience in water and natural resources.
  • Proven experience in social science research, with a strong focus on integrating gender and social inclusion into water and natural resources management.
  • Track record of project development, management, fundraising, and partnership development.
  • Excellent scientific publications and experience in applied research, policy development, and capacity building.

Required Skills for Senior Researcher/ Researcher:

  • Knowledge of irrigation development, water-energy-food-ecosystem nexus, and rural development.
  • Familiarity with river basin management and integrated water resources management in developing countries.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methods and tools.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with CGIAR, transboundary water cooperation, scaling innovations in water and land management.
